Robert Burns, Scotia’s Bard, voted the greatest Scot who ever lived, was born in Alloway by Ayr on the 25th January 1759. Following the publication of his first book of poetry, “The Kilmarnock Edition”, in July 1786, he became famous throughout Scotland and across the globe. Ten years later, on the 21st July 1796, he died at his home in Dumfries at the tender age of only 37 years. Of the last ten years of his life, he lived eight of them in this area, firstly at Ellisland Farm and latterly in Dumfries, where he wrote the vast majority of his songs.
